Mid-war Model 1840 light artillery saber complete with its original metal scabbard. Termed an Ames Type 2, this variation was made from 1860 through 1865 and features a saber that has a flush handguard on the blade side without a recess and its matching scabbard has a throat collar mount similar to the M1860 cavalry model. Blade and scabbard are both in fair to good condition. Made for light artillery (mounted units), the U.S. Ordnance Department contracted for 5,300 of these sabers which were delivered in 1863.
Obverse ricasso shows the date “1863” stamped above the government inspector “DR.” Reverse ricasso of blade bears the extremely thin address of “AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS”. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top and a single wide fuller. Blade is in good overall condition and exhibits a dark gray patina with pinprick rust pitting and dark coloration overall. Leather washer is missing. Blade bears three edge nicks. Brass pommel has a 3/8” high, domed cap and no inspector marks. Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a rich bronze patina. Knucklebow features an arsenal rack number “188” stamped unto the center of the obverse brass crossguard. Original grips retains the black leather which is in poor, dry condition with some light wear-through of the wood handle.
Original, brass twisted wire wrap is completely missing. Iron scabbard has 5 or 6 light dents and exhibits a smooth plum-colored patina overall. Drag stamped with numerals “10”. The iron ring bands are tight and secure two sword suspension rings. Throat is unmarked. This specimen of U.S. contracted Ames M1840 artillery saber is a true wartime artifact of our Civil War at a great price.
