This edged weapon is a imported, Civil War Model 1850 staff and field officer's sword complete with its metal scabbard in good, original condition. An example of a Federal staff officer's non-regulation edged weapon, this sword is an import produced by the Prussian sword maker W. Walscheid. The blade on this weapon measures 32¾" long by 1" wide with a total length of 38". Unusual on the blade is an unstopped fuller that measures 20" long with no narrow fuller. Maker's mark of "W. WALSCHEID / SOLINGEN" strongly stamped on the reverse ricasso while the obverse ricasso shows the brass disk with 'proved' on the inside diameter. An acid etching of intricate scroll design is exhibited on both flats of the blade, starting 3½" up from the ricasso and extending along the blade for some 10". Obverse blade has the same style etching and displays the letters "U.S." flanked by a delicate foliate design. Reverse side of the blade displays the foliate design and a large spreadwinged eagle. Blade retains much of its shiny bright appearance along with scattered peppery pitting near the ricasso areas. The spear-pointed blade edge shows light pitting in areas and a number of scattered tiny light nicks.

A large, iron hilt features a two-band guard with integrated cutouts which features a cutout medallion bearing a small spreadwinged eagle above block letters "U S". A steel grip backstrap curves down at the pommel that is undecorated and features a tiered flat domed cap. Wood grips are sharkskin-covered and show wear and light scuffing. Brass wire wrap is a bit loose and us missing five twists from the handle. The plum-colored metal scabbard is unmarked and in very good condition overall with the entire surface with light rust pinprick pitting. Retains both bands, sword suspension mounts, throat and sword rings. No maker's stamp found on the scabbard. Bands and the drag are strong and tight. Scabbard body shows no dents. This original imported Model 1850 non-regulation Staff and Field officer's sword is a wonderful example of a Civil War edged weapon that would display well in any collection.
