Ca.1850s, 1861-65. Maker-mark: [in fine cursive script above the obverse ricasso] "W.H./ Horstmann & Sons/ Philadelphia". Kings-head stamp appears on reverse ricasso, with "Iron Proof" appearing in discursive script just above. The brilliantly mint blade measures 30" and features a finely etched "E Pluribus Unum" on the obverse and regulation "US" lettering on the reverse. Thin red felt washer present and intact. Hilt is tight and symmetrical, with intricate and finely wrought floral patterns & military symbols; with its gilt exhibiting a bright coppery patina. Grip is made of German silver and features an exquisitely chased American eagle & shield.

The scabbard is made of black sharkskin, adorned with highly-wrought gilt brass-work, displaying bright coppery patina. The upper carrying mount and drag feature military trophies while the center mount carries an unusual profile bust of George Washington. The sharkskin exhibits slight wear. Else fine to near mint. In all, an utterly superb, one-of-a-kind foot officers word.
