Extremely sharp and attractive maker-mark [obverse]: "N.P. Ames/ Cutler/ Springfield." Straight, spear-point blade measuring 28.5" in length and 1" in width at the ricasso. Blade emblazoned with floral patterns, military trophies with "E Pluribus Unum" eagle. Blade bright and near fine with two or three miniscule patches of light pitting. Gilt hilt assembly is tight and symmetrical. Features helmeted pommel with chain & spread-eagle cross guard, ferrule & federal shield langets, all exhibiting a consistent medium bright patina. Also, a vertically lined, medium bright ivory handle, with one lightly darkened & cracked line. Gilt scabbard features exquisitely engraved floral patterns at the throat and drag, with liberty cap/drum & flag midsection. Also, and engraved frog attachment below the upper carrying mount. Lower carrying missing. Exhibits semi-bright patina that fits and matches the hilt assembly. Displays a few light scratches & unobtrusive nicks, else fine. A high grade, highly collectible Ames militia officer's sword.
