This original battle weapon is a seldom seen, Civil War officer’s regulation M1860 cavalry saber manufactured by the firm of C. Roby of West Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

This distinctive, slightly curved, high quality steel blade follows the Model 1860 pattern and measures 34½” long, has a width of 1 1/16” with a 26½” long stopped fuller and 19” narrow fuller. Blade flats exhibit an ornately and deeply etched design of floral vines and laurel branches that run for almost 19” on the flat. Obverse flat presents the foliate along with profuse military motifs including a spread-winged eagle. Reverse flat exhibits foliate and the distinct letters “USC” for United States Cavalry. At the blade’s obverse ricasso is the etched name of the maker that reads “C. Roby & Co. / W Chelmsford / Mass.” in a three-line layout. Reverse ricasso is plain. The light gray blade retains very fine, exquisite detail in its etching and still exhibits a luster and sheen to the metal overall. Steel blade bears tiny scattered pinprick pitting overall with a few areas of deeper rust pitting mid-blade. Blade edge does not appear to have been sharpened but the edge does show three or four moderate nicks and more pitting at the blade tip. Slightly rounded blade back has “IRON PROOF” etched in a panel with an arrowhead tip.

The plain hilt cast brass hilt is in very good condition and displays the symmetrical two-branch guard integrated into the knucklebow. Hilt does exhibit a small crack in the knucklebow. Quillon face is plain and appears to have been pushed forward just a bit. Hilt retains most of its original leather pad or washer. Brass pommel is also plain. Grips are in good condition and feature a dark sharkskin-covered, center-swell wooden handle. Grips are secured with fine double-twisted copper wire wound around the handle. Brass is tight and strong. Sharkskin nodes are worn down some and are chewed up slightly at the bottom.

The steel scabbard is original and is in very good condition. The unadorned steel scabbard, which is strong and tight, has a smooth hard surface that bears a dark, plum brown patina overall. Drag, both mounts and throat color are brass. Entire scabbard wears scattered pitting. Scabbard has both ring mounts which are tight and each secures a 1” diameter brass sword ring. A truly impressive specimen of a Roby, quality-made cavalry officer’s saber that would compliment any Civil War display.
