Presented here is an early nineteenth century military saber produced for the American market. This mounted artillery officer’s saber, circa 1815 to 1840 is an eye-catching, high-quality specimen manufactured by an unknown maker.

The single-edged, curved 36¾” long steel blade exhibits a gilt-etched décor on a blued background interspersed with some bright areas on both blade flats. Blade, with a broad shallow fuller, measures 32” long, 1¼” width and a flat back. Upper portion of both flats of the blade is blued ending with decorative scroll from the ricasso to more than half way to the point. Obverse side of the blade features the spread-winged eagle with a riband inscribed “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and a floral panoply with the head of a Native American Indian shown in a fancy headdress. Reverse side of blade exhibits a military motif. Blade has acquired a most pleasing dark plum patina that shows areas of light peppery pitting and spotting. Blued decoration is mostly worn away but piece still retains much of the gilt finish.

Saber features a fine, faux-cable, gold gilt hilt matched with carved bone grips with vertical and diagonal grooves. Bone is free of cracks but does show a ½” chip at point Ivory shows one hairline crack at the lower reverse side near the guard. Brass ferrule at the base of the grips with the grips surmounted with a brass back strap. Hilt has a decorative P-pattern brass guard with a slightly down-turned quillon. Hilt has two, circular 1½” diameter langets with a raised border and an eight-point raised star centered in the middle.

Brass scabbard is plain with narrow brass bands and carry rings. Has a small symmetrical narrow drag. A fine specimen of an early piece of Americana edged weaponry.
