We have encountered a few of these oddities before. There is no maker mark but there is a date on one side of the ricasso stamped opposite from the way it is usually done.

The blade is semi-bright with light to moderate scattered mottling over its surface. There is no pitting to speak of except for a tiny bit on either side of the ricasso. The edge has 3 nicks that can be felt more than seen. These seem to be in the last third of the blade toward the point. One side of the ricasso is blank but the other is stamped with a date of “1861.” The top of the stamping faces the hilt rather than the point as is usually seen.

The hilt is in fair condition. The leather washer is present below the counterguard. The leather covering the grip is worn and missing just under the pommel cap. The twisted wire wrap is present and tight but missing from the same area as the leather mentioned above. This naked area also has a slight chip in the wood. The pommel cap, knuckle bow and counterguard are tight and have a light patina.

Proper metal scabbard is present but has been painted gold. This was often done by veterans to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the war. We have also encountered items that have been painted gold for the 50th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. The scabbard is complete with throat and both rings. There are no major dents and only light scattered pitting concentrated mostly on the bottom third of the scabbard.
