The Isaac, Campbell & Co firm in London, England manufactured this English Pattern 1853 cavalry saber and scabbard.  Often referred to as ‘Isaac & Co’, the firm was a notorious retailer and exporter who supplied military goods and swords only the Confederate Central government who purchased the swords and sabers in limited quantities. In operation during the war years only, the Isaac company ceased business at war’s end and all items bearing their name can be considered Confederate.

This M1853 cavalry trooper’s saber was the most common edged weapon sold by the firm. In fine, veteran condition, this cavalry trooper’s blade is clearly stamped on its broad back with the marking “ISAAC & Co” in individual letter dies. The 34½” long blade is almost straight and void of any etching, but does feature a single, unstopped 24” long fuller on either side. Both ricassos unmarked. Entire blade has acquired a light gray scheen with just hints of light scattered rust pitting on both flats and on the back.

The flat, iron-mounted knucklebow is joined by the two branches at the flat oval counterguard that terminates in a quillon ending in a flat disc.  Entire hilt wears a dark gray mottled patina and has original grips of checkered leather scales riveted to the tang of the blade with five small rivets. Leather grips are worn down and show light to moderate flaking or chipping. Hilt is tight to the tang and retains its original washer pad. Iron pommel exhibits an unadorned single-domed cap and exposes the blade gang tip.

Original iron scabbard is in good condition and exhibits a smooth hard surface completely covered with a dark brown rust pitting and oxidation. Larger pitting on the obverse side. No visible dents and dings. Scabbard has no bands but the two ring mounts are tight and each secures a 1” diameter iron sword ring. Throat collar retains only one of the small setscrews. Drag is strong and shows light wear.

This London-made Isaac & Co saber and scabbard is a great specimen of a Confederate cavalryman’s saber that likely saw service during the Civil War.
