This standard Model 1840 NCO sword is made by Ames and has an inspection date of 1863.
The blade is semi-bright with moderate mottling but no pitting. The edge has 3 or 4 very small nicks. One side of the ricasso has “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE, / MASS” which is slightly obscured by mottling while the other side is marked “US / ADK /1863.” Original washer is present at the base of the blade but looks moderately worn.
The cast brass hilt is in good condition with the usual double guard and single knuckle bow. Bow is marked “AHC.” The brass surfaces show some light to moderate wear and the knuckle bow has some slight waviness to it.
