This original, imported Model 1850 Officer’s Staff and Field sword, complete with original metal scabbard, is a most handsome edged specimen. The George W. Simons sword manufactory firm in Philadelphia mounted and assembled high quality steel blades made in Solingen, Prussia and also American-made blades by Collins & Co of Connecticut.

Carried by many higher-ranking Federal officers during the Civil War, this quality steel edged weapon measures a total length of 38” from tip to pommel. The handsome steel blade is 32” long and carries a 14” narrow fuller and a 22” stopped wide fuller. Blade, with its slightly rounded back, has a light gray coloring, profusely embellished via the acid etching process on both sides which features ornate motifs of floral designs. Leather pad or washer is missing. Obverse ricasso is blank save for a small, shield-like device. Ornate etching extends upward with detailed foliate and a pennant with “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” More foliate continues to within 3” of the wide fuller tip. Reverse ricasso is blank followed with foliate and ornate script letters “US” followed with flags and more decorative foliate. This blade wears a fine, light gray, satin-like sheen overall. Has just a few scattered light discoloration spots and pinprick rust pitting mostly near the point. One tiny edge nick visible.

Sword has a highly detailed, brass hilt featuring a two-band cutout, guard and knucklebow cast in one piece. Hilt’s upper band has prominent cutout script letters “US” surrounded by finely detailed, cutout foliate. Lower band has an intricate, foliate cutout design. Covering the center-swelled wood handle is a grip of light gray sharkskin, possibly rayskin, in excellent tight condition with just normal slight seam separation at the bottom of the grip. A small, 1” long, skin crack is visible on top area near the pommel. Double twisted brass / copper wire is wrapped tightly about the grooves in the handle and flanked with single strands of brass wire throughout the grips. Brass ‘Phrygian-style’ pommel cap is border-engraved in a floral pattern and exhibits a highly engraved, tiered domed top. Cap is tight on tang. Knucklebow / hilt show just a slight movement on the tang. Ornate quillon, never bent. All gilt brass has a bright sheen.

The smooth, bright, plum-colored, undented steel scabbard is in excellent original condition. Its two brass ring mounts, brass bands and brass drag are all tight and adorned with simple edge scalloping. The tight, brass throat collar is inset at the throat and is secured with one small brass screw, slightly buggered. No maker’s stamping visible on scabbard. Sword bands have their small, brass setscrew. Drag slipper missing the setscrew.

Fine, original Model 1850 Staff and Field edged weapons are hard to fine in the collecting community and this handsome imported specimen is worthy of any weapon collection.
