An early HUSSAR HILTED form of saber with a combination guard and knuckle bow in iron with a brass pommel, strap and ferrule. This particular militia cavalry saber resembles one produced by Joseph Rose, circa 1800. Although this specimen is not marked as such, it does possess a similar triple-fuller blade. The wood formed body of the grip was originally covered in thin black leather, and then bound with brass wire (which is long since missing). There are small amounts of that leather still adhered to the wood grip.
The blade as stated above, contains three grooved fullers measuring 25” in length on the full 36 ¼” blade. The entire length of this saber, pommel to tip is 41 ½”. As for the condition of the blade, it exhibits scattered dark areas of mild surface pitting and spots, along with eight visible areas of small nicks located on the cutting edge.
The accompanying black leather scabbard has a brass throat with a brass button stud attachment for the frog on the shoulder belt. Seam stitching running along the rear side is still present and tight. There is a 3 ½” loss of leather and possibly a brass scabbard tip at the end.
Most certainly a survivor of the War Of 1812.
