This is a white buff belt in good condition. The leather surfaces are very dirty from age and storage but it is still pliable. The belt is complete with all its original parts including the strip of buff leather that passes behind the plate. The plate itself is made up of two circular pieces connected by an “s” link. The left piece has crossed cannons flanked by “US” while the right plate has a spread-winged eagle. Both plates and the “s” hook have a matching patina showing they have been together for quite some time. The leather frog which holds the sword is in good condition with a surface that matches the rest of the belt and with tight stitching.

The Model 1832 Foot Artillery sword scabbard is in rougher shape. It has a lot of surface finish loss and crackling on what is left. The body of the scabbard is split in two places but none are torn through. The scabbard remains in one piece. The first split is on the edge just below the frog. This split is less than an inch in either direction with some material loss. The second split is more severe. It starts on the side about halfway down the scabbard and runs across the back to the center seam. At this point the line of the split divides. It runs in one direction to the opposite edge and stops while the other part runs down the seam for approx. 1.25 inches. There does not appear to be any material loss along this split. Nothing is visible from the front and as stated above the scabbard remains in one piece. With the sword in place there is no danger of the split becoming worse but if the sword is removed the scabbard should be laid flat.

The sword itself matches the belt in condition. The blade has a light patina and light scattered mottling. There are one or two small nicks along the edge but nothing major. An attempt has been made by someone to clean the blade in the area of the ricasso leaving behind bright surface scratches in this area. Over time this area should darken again. One side of the ricasso has a spread-winged eagle and “N. P. AMES SPRINGFIELD” in three lines, including the eagle. Some of the eagle is defaced from the attempted cleaning but all the lettering is clear. The opposite side of the ricasso has “UNITED STATES 1833” in three lines. The cast brass grip is dark with some scattered lighter areas. Again, these lighter areas appear to be from an attempted cleaning. The underside of the hilt is marked “S. HUSE-NEWBURYPORT” showing that this sword was made in the first year of production.
