ORIGINAL, MID-19TH CENTURY, BRASS-MOUNTED, U.S. MARINE SERGEANT’S SWORD

Item Code: 30-1845

Here is a fine quality, U.S. Marine ‘Eaglehead Pommel’ sword specimen circa 1846-1851 that was made for the American market, and imported by one of the three William H. Horstmann retailing firms of Philadelphia, PA. Locally assembled and retailed, this example of a seldom seen United States Marine’s sergeant’s sword is in very good condition.

Though with no marks or stamped characteristics to indicate affiliation with the USMC, this specimen is pictured in the Horstmann reference work titled “Horstmann: The Enterprise of Military Equipage,” Manassas, VA, 1997, on p 140 and pictures and defines the sword as stated. Included on the page is a copy of a Horstmann worker’s actual work drawing of the sword. Sword exhibits a 30” long, single-edged curved blade with a single, broad unstopped 22” long fuller that runs from the ricasso to the very tip of the point. Etched on half of both blade flats are remnants of the original fire bluing and gold gilted engraved floral scrolls. Colors have turned to a pleasing, dark patina. Areas of dark rust oxidation with some deep pitting are visible at the tip and on the ricasso areas.

Black leather wrapped wood grips are tight and appear to have been rewrapped, not original leather. No maker’s address on the piece save for the deeply stamped “HORSTMANN” found on the front bottom portion of the brass counterguard. Cast brass pommel is in the form of an eagle’s head with the large, undecorated, brass “P-guard” knucklebow. Sword has no accompanying scabbard. This imported, 1840-1850’s, U.S. Marine Sergeant’s sword, with its handsome blued & gilted blade and mellow brass mounted ‘eaglehead’ pommel makes a fine specimen of early Americana collectible.
