Hilt is made of cast brass with spread winged eagle stamped into both sides of the pommel. Grip has three rivet heads and scalloped feather design. Plain, straight counterguard with a quillon on each end. One side of the counterguard is stamped with the number “W.A.T.” while the other side is plain. The blade is clean and bright. There is some light mottling in the area of the point on both sides and some light scattered discolorations in the area of the ricasso. One of the blade’s edges has several small nicks. The blade has three fullers, a long one and two that are short and run parallel to each other. The ricasso is stamped on one side with an eagle and “N. P. Ames, Springfield, Mass.” This stamping is readable but weak. The opposite side has “United States, 1842, JCB.” The date is thin on this stamping.

With the sword is the original buff leather belt rig dyed black to match the 1851 regulations and the original scabbard.

The scabbard is in good condition. The leather is strong, as is the seam down the back of the scabbard. The leather surfaces do exhibit some very faint crease lines but nothing substantial. The patina to the brass throat and drag match the hilt of the sword nicely. The drag is missing one of the four pins holding it in place causing it to wiggle a bit.

The leather belt rig is in excellent condition. It is pliable and shows signs of light wear from age, use and storage. Both brass rings are present as is the brass adjustment buckle. The belt plate consists of three pieces. A brass disc with a raised spread-winged eagle at center with an attached “S” hook and a brass disc with the raised letters “US” at center. Attached to the edge of this disc is an eye for attaching the “S” hook.

Overall this sword and belt rig are in excellent shape for its age and length of service. All together they exhibit no damage and only wear consistent with use.
