These swords were used by Marine Corps Officers from 1859-1875; after that they were carried by Marine NCOs. This example has a blade made by Weyenberg and was imported by Horstmann & Sons, Philadelphia. The hilt is in good condition. Leather grip shows light wear while twisted wire wrap is complete. The wire wrap has some slight movement from shrinkage of the wood and leather grip over time. The brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard are in good condition and are tight. Counterguard has scrollwork design and quillon. The blade is etched on both sides with scrollwork and floral design. One side has “USMC’ etched at center while the opposite side has American eagle. Etching is stronger on the side with the eagle while it is light on the opposite side. The blade has moderate mottling throughout but is heavier toward the point. No visible nicks on the blade and none felt. Ricasso is stamped with makers crowned head and etched with the Horstmann name. There is no scabbard.
