This imported saber is the only known ‘transitional’ Model 1840 / 1860 cavalry saber produced by the German firm of “C. R. Kirshbaum & Company” that we have seen.  Specimen exhibits the early M1840 characteristics of a heavy, hatchet point blade, flat back, pointed quillon, high pommel dome and a robust brass hilt combined with the M1860 swelled wood handle. The hefty steel saber is slightly curved and has a total length of 40¼” long. The wide fuller is 25¼” long with an integral narrow fuller 12” long.  Weighing approximately 4¼” lbs., including the steel scabbard, the blade is free of markings save for “K&C” within an oval mark stamped on the reverse ricasso.  Obverse ricasso plain.  Blade has a mellow, dusky gray patina and shows light scattered areas of age discoloration with pinprick rust pitting overall.  Appears to have been lightly cleaned some time ago.

The heavy, two-branch brass hilt, still with its leather washer, is in very good condition with no bends or breaks. Grips are very good and feature a center-swelled wood handle covered with black bridle leather that shows light scuffing and wear, but no flaking or chipping. Leather tight and wrapped with thin, double twisted brass wire wound around the handle. Wire very tight. The Phrygian-type brass pommel cap has the high dome and exhibits no inspector marks. Hefty steel scabbard is unadorned and wears an even dark plum brown colored patina overall. Body has scattered areas of light to moderate rust pitting. Mounts are tight and retain the suspension rings.  Scabbard body has one small screw on each side near the chamfered collar.

This ‘one of a kind transitional’ M1840 / 1860 cavalry saber in very good original condition with its clean good looks would compliment any edged weapon collection or cavalry display.
