Here is an original, Civil War enlisted Emerson & Silver Model 1840 light artillery saber in very good condition overall. Made for the State of New Jersey’s light artillery mounted units, this edged weapon is stamped on the obverse ricasso of the blade with a clear stamping “N. J./ 1863” in block format while the reverse ricasso bears the five-line maker’s mark of “EMERSON / & / SILVER / TRENTON / NJ.”

Blade is in fine condition. Saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade has a slightly rounded flat top, and a single wide fuller. Blade time is excellent and exhibits bright sheen with just a few scattered specks of pitting. Original leather washer pad is strong and intact. Blade’s true edge in excellent shape, no nicks. Brass Phrygian pommel has a 3/8” high, domed cap and bears no inspector marks. Brass hilt, including the pommel, has acquired a rich, most pleasing bronze patina. Original grips, strong and tight, consist of a turned, wooden handle wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, double-twisted, brass wire wrap. Leather is dry and has light scuffing overall. All brass wire wrap is tightly wrapped.

Metal scabbard exhibits a shiny, light gray coloring overall with just pinprick pitting overall. Entire scabbard has been cleaned. No visible stampings on drag. The large, iron mounts are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings. Scabbard collar and throat are tight. A handsome specimen of a Federal Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber.
