REVOLUTIONARY WAR ENGLISH SABER WITH ORIGINAL SCABBARD

$1,750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 814-09

Totally unmarked is this brass and iron mounted English Lion’s Head sword / saber which was a type commonly used in America during the American Revolution. In good original condition, this plain but purposeful saber is a quality piece that produced by an unknown maker. During the American Revolution, the saber was carried by many cavalry officers and foot officers.

This rugged specimen features a brass and iron mounted hilt fitted to a 25” long, slightly curved, single-edged, plain blade with a rounded point. The steel blade features a 7” long false edge with a 17½’ long narrow fuller runs from the hilt to 7½” from the point. A 23” long, unstopped wide fuller measures from the ricasso area to the tip. Both flats of this blade exhibit no color or firing but show a dusty medium gray sheen with moderate rust pitting and cleaning. Has no floral and military décor or etching. Unfortunately, no maker’s marks appear on either ricasso. Front section of the steel blade free of any bluing or stampings. Blade back is flat. Blade edge has a number of nicks.

The one-piece grips are wood carved in a spiral pattern with no leather cover. Wood shows light shrinkage and a small sliver of wood missing at the pommel base and at the guard’s brass ferule. The brass Lion’s Head pommel has the capstan rivet but no top strap. Knucklebow narrows at the pommel and widens toward the guard which spreads into a 2” wide brass straight cross guard.

Black leather scabbard has the brass drag mounted at the base. The top band is still tight to the upper body and retains its single brass hook for securing to a belt. Leather body is strong, exhibits good stitching but is a bit dry and supple. Does show moderate crazing and light scuffing. A good looking English Rev War / Federal period saber and scabbard.
