Here is a fine Mansfield & Lamb saber specimen of the type issued to Federal horsemen during the American Civil War. Manufactured by partners Henry Mansfield and Estus Lamb in the village of Forestdale, Rhode Island, this saber was one of 37,500 edged weapons produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department by the firm during the war.
The slightly curved saber blade measures 35” long, has a width of 1 1/16”, and has a 27” long, wide fuller and a narrow fuller 18½” long. Blade features a very nice bright finish overall with just few light blemishes. Obverse riccasso is sharply marked with “U.S. / GGS / 1862” while the reverse ricasso bears “MANSFIELD / & LAMB / FORESTDALE R.I.” with the reverse markings all contained in a large oval. Brass hilt, slightly loose, is missing its original buff leather washer. The high domed pommel cap bears government inspector mark of “C.E.W.” (Charles E. Wilson). Hilt retains a beautiful, light golden uncleaned bronze patina. Sword grips exhibit the typical swelled leather covered handle with two-strand, twisted brass wire wrapped around the handle.
A pleasing, original black leather covering wraps the handle with just a few spots of light scuffing. Wire twists are strong. The fine looking, steel scabbard has acquired a fine, dusky plum patina and is free of dents and dings. Upper ring mount shows much evidence of belt wear and is worn. The two ring mounts are tight and hold two 1¼” diameter sword rings. A small perforation is visible at the drag where the metal meets the scabbard tip. This handsome saber cavalry specimen would highlight any Civil War edged weapon display or collection.
