Item Code: 410-104

Civil War Model 1850 foot officer’s sword in fair to good condition complete with its leather scabbard. The regulation infantry officer’s sword exhibits a high-grade, etched steel blade and fine brass hilt.

Blade measures 32” long, 1” wide and has a single, stopped fuller 22” long with an integrated 14½” long narrow fuller. On the obverse ricasso is plain while the blade has a 3” long, acid-etched design of foliate emerging from the base as does the reverse ricasso. Reverse design contains foliate with a national device that has the maker’s name etched within but etching has been worn and is thin leaving only traces of the word “NEW YORK” at its base. Obverse ricasso is plain save for a shield-shape panel at the center. The reverse flat exhibits more of the acid-etched design that features letters “U S” in block letters flanked left and right with a delicate foliate of leaves and scroll decorations. Obverse blade flat shows exhibited a military motif of a national shield device below a panoply of flags and cannon. Entire blade exhibits a smooth light gray luster finish from cleaning and a light pin prick pitting overall. One deep edge nick visible on the blade about 9” from the hilt.

Brass hilt is deeply cast with a detailed, single paneled guard and knucklebow. Panels delicately cast and display oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves. Hilt face has been cleaned while the knucklebow and pommel have not. Grips are brown leather covered, original, tight and in good condition. Have double twist wire and wrapped around a wooden swelled handle. No leather washer. Brass pommel is decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves. Hilt is slightly loose on the tang. Engraved brass quillon.

The black leather scabbard is complete but is very supple and exhibits four weak areas of creases over the main body. No visible repairs or restorations. Scabbard leather body has moderate to heavy cracking, flaking and scuffing overall. Brass furniture is original and wears a dark bronze patina. Two, plain, brass bands support the two suspension sword mounts with rings. Drag is in good condition with just normal dings, dents and scratches from use.
