Item Code: 172-3842

Here is a rare, quality artillery saber piece produced by the Sheble and Fisher firm of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is one of only 203 artillery sabers purchased under contract by the U. S. Ordnance Department in its First Contract of 18 November 1861.

The steel, single-edged blade is curved with a rounded back and measures a total of 37¾” long with a 32½” long blade; an integral wide stopped fuller 25½” long and an 18” long narrow fuller. Weighing 3lbs. including the steel scabbard, the saber is considered the Type 1 with the recessed counterguard to accept the raw throat of the metal scabbard. Has its original small leather pad or washer still set in the hilt recess. Reverse ricasso bears a thin maker marking of “SHEBLE & FISHER / PHILADA”. The steel blade has been heavily cleaned and polished to exhibit a pleasing, dusty finish overall. Has just few points of light pitting on the blade. No evidence of sharpening along the blade edge. One small edge nick.

With the Model 1840 artillery type hilt is a brass single guard / knucklebow that retains a mottled, splotchy bronze coloring. Handle features a wooden core wound with cording then wrapped with original black bridal leather. Twisted brass wire on the grips is tight and strong. Grips are very good but are noticeably loose on the blade tang. Saber has a brass pommel cap in the Phrygian design with a brim that exhibits no inspector marks.

The Type 1 heavy iron scabbard is raw throated with no collar and bears a half dozen very small dings overall. Scabbard has been cleaned and burnished heavily leaving a silvery finished surface. Both sword mounts on scabbard are tight and retain the original suspension rings. Drag shows no maker’s marks. These S & F artillery sabers are very rare and quite desirable.
