Tapered double edged blade with a surface that has very light scattered pitting and mottling. The blade is approx. 29.50 inches long and meas.1.00 inch wide at the ricasso. The first 5.00 inches of the blade, starting at the ricasso, is engraved with a scrolled fern design within a rectangle. Over the length of this engraving the blade tapers down to 0.75 of an inch wide. The rectangle is capped off by a scroll and fern. The blade in this area makes a very visible narrowing to approx. 10/16’s of an inch and continues to narrow to the point. The blade edges have numerous small nicks. Most are too small to be seen but not all.

Brass hilt has a clamshell orb with capstan at top. Plain knucklebow screws into the side of the orb at top and comes around the grip toward the bottom of the grip and becomes a double quillon with fluted ends over pas d’anes below which is just above the counterguard that is elliptical on each side and is perforated with numerous small holes and a scrollwork decoration. The grip is square and wrapped from top to bottom with twisted wire with 13 courses of heavy bullion wire. The top and bottom of the grip have a woven ring of bullion wire.

Black leather scabbard is in good condition with a good surface finish and only light crazing. Brass throat and drag are plain and long. The throat meas. approx. 4.75 inches long with simple linear decoration and a scrolled bottom. The face has a 2.75 inch long stud for attaching to a frog. There is a good bit of rubbing on the brass surface which has dulled any gilt that remained. The drag shows more dirt and wear that the hilt but has the same linear decoration with a scalloped top. Drag meas. approx. 6.75 inches long.
