This is a beautiful knight’s head militia officer’s sword dating from the 1850’s.

The blade is straight, double-sided with a spear point and a central fuller running from the ricasso to an area within 2.25 inches of the point. Blade surface is clean with light scattered mottling throughout. There are three minor spot of surface pitting on the lower third of the blade near the point. Both edges are free of nicks. Both sides of the blade are etched with a floral design that have different patriotic motifs. One side has a shield with “U.S.” at center surmounted by panoply of flags which is in turn surmounted by a spread-winged eagle with riband and stars. The opposite side has a figure of Tecumseh surmounted by a spread-winged eagle with stars. Etching is clear but not crisp.

Heavy all brass hilt has a wonderful very detailed knight’s head pommel with a thick crest. A heavy guilt chain acts as a knuckle bow and runs from the knight’s chin to a wonderful counterguard of a spread-winged eagle in flight above a patriotic shield. This guard is the same on both sides. Grip is hexagonal in shape. Each side of the grip is made up of two side panels that are engraved with laurel leaves and each of the two face panels has a linear decoration. Grip has a few minor dents but nothing that detracts. Where the top of the grip meets the pommel cap there is some wear. Grip has just the slightest wiggle.

Brass scabbard is nicely marked on reverse near throat “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE /MASS.” Throat is present as are both mounts and drag. Upper mount has floral decoration with two rings while the lower mount has a perched eagle in a medallion with a single ring and floral decoration. Thin drag wraps around the edge of the scabbard. Bottom of drag is an acorn with the arms of the drag being oak leaves emanating from the acorn. Scabbard shows light wear and minor dents consistent with use.

All the brass on the sword has a matching light patina. That combined with the wonderful decoration of the flying eagle counterguard and knight’s head pommel combine to make this a very attractive item.
