Here is an original Civil War Model 1850 foot officer’s sword in fine condition complete with its leather scabbard. Sword is unmarked and is no doubt an import item.

The handsome imported infantry officer’s sword is in good condition and exhibits a mostly bright blade with good detail and etching. Crafted from high-grade steel, the blade measures 30.75 inches long, 1.08 inch wide at the ricasso and has a single, unstopped fuller 21.50 inches long. On the flat of the obverse side of the blade starting just above the ricasso is an acid-etched design of foliates and a long thin stylized “US” followed by more foliates. The blade reverse also exhibits acid-etched design that features letters and an American flag followed by more foliate. Blade exhibits its original bright finish over most of its length but there is moderate mottling scattered throughout. The edge has one small visible nick and the area of the point has several spots of pitting.

The brass hilt features a finely detailed, two-paneled guard and knucklebow. Hilt wears a pleasing mellow bronze patina. Very good condition original grips are tight and consist of a grooved, wooden center-swell handle wrapped in high quality, light-colored rayskin. Double-twisted brass wire is bound around the handle. Leather washer is missing. Brass pommel is decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves and features a tiered domed cap. Hilt is tight to the grips. Knuckle bow and domed pommel wear a dull bronze patina with just few scattered spots of dark oxidation. Never cleaned.

The original leather scabbard is a very good specimen complete with brass furniture. Entire scabbard leather body is strong and exhibits a surface with minor crazing, slight scuffing and all seam stitching tight. Two, plain, brass bands, adorned with a single tooling line on each band, support the suspension sword mounts and rings. Scabbard is free of any maker’s mark and the sword mounts, along with the brass drag, have acquired a mellow bronze patina. Drag is in very good condition with just normal dings and scratches from use. Scabbard retains two of the three, mount attachment set screws but the drag screw is missing.

This piece is a nice example of a Model 1850 Civil War Foot Officer’s sword.
