This Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber, commonly referred to as “The Old Wristbreaker”, was one of the ‘tried and true’ military edged weapons used by U.S. mounted forces before and during the Civil War. This imported steel blade is slightly curved, has a flat wide back and is single-edged with a slight false edge.  Saber, also called a dragoon heavy cavalry saber, exhibits a blade that measures 36” long with an integral wide fuller 27” long and a narrow fuller some 16” long. Weighing 4½ lbs., including the steel scabbard, the blade on this Wristbreaker is marked “WALDSCHEID / SOLINGEN” on the obverse ricasso.  Reverse ricasso is plain with no markings. The hefty steel blade exhibits a bright coloring and shows almost no pitting. Blade shows no edge nicks.

The heavy, two-branch brass hilt, still with its leather washer, is in excellent condition and exhibits a fine, untouched mellow patina. Brown bridle leather grips are in good condition and feature a wooden handle that is wrapped with a thin, double twisted brass wire wound around the handle.  Wraps are tight as is the brass wire.  Cavalry saber has a brass pommel cap in the Phrygian design. Hilt has an unbent quillon.

Hefty iron scabbard is unadorned with a surface that bears a smooth, brown plumb coloring overall with only light scattered pitting.  Both sword mounts are tight and retain the suspension rings.  The thick drag has no visible angle wear at the bottom edge.

This imported M1840 ‘heavy cavalry’ saber and scabbard, with its rugged looks and reasonable price, easily compliments any edged weapon collection or starts one.
