AMES M1840 LIGHT ARTILLERY SABER / SCABBARD DATED 1861

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-4065

Here is an original, Civil War Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber in good condition overall. Termed an Ames Type 2, this saber was made from 1860 through 1865 and features a counterguard without a recess, and its matching metal scabbard has a throat collar mount similar to the M1860 cavalry saber.

Blade is 32 ½” long, curved, single edged with a flat top, and a single wide fuller and no narrow fuller. It is in good condition with only light mottling and no edge nicks. The surface is bright. Spine of the blade has a ding in it approx. 14.00 inches from the point. Ding appears on both sides of the blade. Looks almost like a flaw in the iron. It is not a major blemish. Obverse ricasso is faintly stamped with  “U.S./ J. H. / 1861” in block format while the reverse ricasso bears the maker’s mark of “--- /---COPEE / MASS” in very thin, hard to discern stamping. Original leather washer pad is strong and intact.

Pommel has a domed cap with knucklebow. Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a nice light patina. Original grips, strong and tight, consist of a turned, wooden handle with seventeen grooves wrapped with brown leather and encircled with twisted brass wire wrap. Leather is in good condition and shows light wear. Brass wire wrap is tight.

The undented metal scabbard exhibits a dark surface overall with some brighter metal showing through where an attempted was made to clean it. Drag shows the government inspector initials “D.R.” The large, iron ring mounts are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings. Scabbard collar and throat are tight.

A handsome specimen of a Federal Ames Model 1840 light artillery saber.
