Maker mark: “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.”; Inspector mark: “U.S. / J.H./ 1859.” Dark blade measuring 34.75” in length, 1.125” in width at base. Markings moderately worn, but legible. Blade light pitting, especially near tip. Washer missing. Hilt assembly tight and symmetrical. Brasswork displays tarnish, scratching, & a variety of minor nicks. Original leather grips, with light wear & cracking. Tight wire wrap. Pommel cap inspector stamp: “J.H.” Scabbard exhibits moderate rust worn smooth, and a variety of minor dings. Else Good plus. Solid specimen of the scarce Ames ’59 saber.
