Beginning around 1830 the U.S. Navy medical officers / surgeons carried this small sword pattern with straight, thin blades. This sword is decorated with a fouled anchor langet and a finely engraved brass scabbard with a flying American Eagle and Stars & Stripes shield. Adam W. Spies formerly of Birmingham was a sword maker that located his shop in the United States on Madin Lane in New York. The blade is blued with line engraved, gold washed designs of an American Eagle with E. Pluribus Unum and stands of arms. It is marked A.W. Spies / Warranted. The grip is polished wood and wound with fancy twisted "Dragoon" style wire with untwisted single strands on each side.
