The blade on this sword is in very nice shape. The surface is semi-bright with only the very lightest scattered mottling. Blade edge has several small nicks. One side of the ricasso is marked with the inspector’s mark, initials and year of manufacture which reads “US 1865 AGM” in three lines. The opposite side of the ricasso is marked “ROBY CHELMSFORD MASS.” in three lines as well. The original leather washer is present under the counterguard and is complete.

The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather is worn some but the twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard have a nice light patina and nothing is loose. Top of brass guard is stamped “I 12 CAV.  31.”

Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard has been plated and shows light wear but no dents.  [AD]
