Item Code: 344-2517

Sword is minus the scabbard and meas. approx. 30.50 inches long from pommel to point. The blade meas. approx. 24.75 inches long with a dark surface. There is a central stopped fuller that meas. approx. 15.00 inches long. Blade exhibits light to heavy pitting scattered over the length of the blade. Both sides of the blade are etched. The obverse side has a continual floral and scroll work decoration with “ROBY & CO. / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS” etched just above the ricasso. The reverse side has the same foliate and scrollwork etching. The edge has several nicks.

It is known that Navy and Marine Corps swords were produced in various lengths. Though this blade is on the short side it does not appear to have been cut but was produced at this length.

The cast brass hilt is tight and features an imitation wire-wrapped ribbed grip. Pommel is globular with a high capstan-style rivet. At the point where the knucklebow / quillon crosses the blade there rests a brass cast, double, clam shell-shaped counterguard with the inner guard turned downward with an engraved linear border. The horizontal guard has some waviness. All brass wears an untouched bronze patina.  [ad]
