Although impossible to say for sure but lodged in the grip appears to be a small lead slug. Sword has a sharkskin covered grip with fancy twisted brass wire. Sharkshin is worn down at several spots with under cord visible. Blade is 28” long with deep etchings of fouled anchor, panoply of arms, scroll designs, oak leaves, oval of stars, riband with “U.S.N.”, etc. maker marked “W.H. HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA”. Spine marked “IRON PROOF”. Hilt is a little loose. No scabbard. [ss]
