Here is an original, Civil War enlisted Ames Model 1840 artillery saber in very good condition. Blade is in excellent condition. Made for artillery mounted units, this edged weapon is stamped on the obverse ricasso of the blade with a clear stamping “U.S. / M.M. / 1864” in block format while the reverse ricasso is blank where a maker’s stamp is often located. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top, and a single wide fuller. Blade is excellent but has a coating of old oil or cosmoline-like product on it which the new owner can easily remove. Blade’s true edge in excellent shape, no nicks. Original leather washer pad is strong and intact.

Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has acquired a rich bronze patina. Original grips, strong and tight, consist of a turned, wooden handle with seventeen grooves wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap. Leather is dry and has very minor scuffing overall. Brass wire wrap remains tight.

The undented iron scabbard exhibits a dark, almost black appearance with spotty surface oxidation. No visible stampings on drag. The large, iron mounts are tight and hold the two sword rings. Scabbard collar and throat are tight and are each stamped with “13”.  Scabbard is in very good condition.

A handsome specimen of a Federal model 1840 artillery saber.  [jet]
