This seldom seen 1860-dated, Type-1 Model 1840 artillery saber is a fine representative of the heavy combat saber issued to Federal artillerymen during the War of Rebellion. Manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company of Massachusetts sometime in 1860, this saber was one those last Type-1 (recess in guard) sabers made before the company transitioned to the Type 2 (no recess on guard) artillery saber.

The 37” long, curved, unsharpened blade bears almost all of its original, shiny bright finish.  Blade is 1 5/16” wide and has a back thickness of 7/16”.  Among the features on these M1840 type 1 sabers is the recess in the guard for the scabbard, the squared back profile, grips that narrow at the pommel and widen toward the hilt, and the hatchet point tip. Specimen exhibits a fine appearance that is smooth and clean.   Blade is crisp and wears a dusky gray scheen with some scattered light pinprick pitting.  Blade does show a few tiny edge nicks.  Obverse ricasso is stamped “1860” while the reverse ricasso bears a double-stamped banner address with “Made By / AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE”. Markings are thin and ‘MASS’ is not seen.

Brass guard on the hilt is the Type 1 recess that allowed the raw edge of the collarless scabbard a tight fit.  A domed pommel cap bears no inspector marks on the pommel brim.  Grips are in excellent condition with the original black bridle leather strong.  No cracks or breaks but does show the seam.  Twisted brass wire wrap is excellent and tight.  Brass hilt, with its single knucklebow, is tight and strong and has not been cleaned.  The very fine, undented steel scabbard wears a great dark plum / gray patina with scattered light pitting overall.  Drag shows little or no edge wear.  No visible inspector marks on the drag. Two sword ring mounts are tight and secure two 1¼” diameter sword rings.  Scabbard collar is flush with no throat.  This fine M1840 Type-1 Ames artillery saber dated 1860 is a worthy specimen to add to any edged weapon collection.   [ra]
