IMPORTED MODEL 1860 CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER WITH SCABBARD

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: E2688

This unusual, imported sword has characteristics of the M1840 and M1860 enlisted and officer’s cavalry sabers. The blade is plain and unstamped. There is only a set of narrow, notched, lines on the ricasso; two on the left and one on the right. The blade is clean and without scratches or nicks of any kind and has an attractive mottled gray patina. Curved blade measures approximately 31” long, nearly 1 ¼” wide at the hilt with a 24 ½” long stopped fuller and 15 ½” long narrow fuller. The spine of the blade is completely flat. Retains its original leather washer.

The cast brass hilt features a recessed underside with two branches (lightly embellished with laurels) and the knucklebow curving back toward the pommel to form the typical cavalry sword hand guard. The Phygerian-style brass pommel cap sports more pronounced laurel leaf embellishments. Grips are very good condition. The ribbed wood handle is covered with smooth black leather. Three small “rubs” are found on the high spots of the grip near the pommel. A fine, double-twist of brass wire rests within the grooves with each turn. Brass wire wrap is tight and strong. Pommel is two-piece with a smooth, peened blade tang.

Original, iron mounted scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits a pleasing, brown / plum patina overall. Has just normal scattered light oxidation spots. Scabbard body has no dents or dings. Retains its throat collar, ring mounts, rings, and drag. Mounts are tight and strong, as are the 1” iron rings.

This is an interesting and unusual imported light cavalry saber in excellent condition.   [jet]
