IMPORT MODEL 1840 CAVALRY OFFICER’S SABER WITH SCABBARD

$1,400.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: E2692

This imported M-1840 cavalry saber is an excellent original piece that features a profusely embellished brass hilt and a handsome, slightly curved, high quality etched blade. Blade measures 35 ½” long, 1 ¼” wide at the hilt with a 26 ½” long fuller and 18” long narrow fuller. Reverse ricasso is marked "PDL" and was manufactured by P. D. Luneschloss, in Solingen, Prussia. Continuing up this side of the blade, the etchings and frosting include floral patterns with a serifed “US” in the center. The opposite side features a spread-winged eagle. The eagle holds a thin ribbon in its beak reading “E. PLURIBUS UNIM”. Sun rays emanate 360 degrees around the eagle from behind. The blade features the typical thick, flat spine. The blade surface is clean and bright.

The embellished, cast brass hilt is typical of sword hilts on most all cavalry officers’ sabers. With a symmetrical two-branch guard integrated into the knucklebow, the hilt displays the acanthus fan on the inside quillon, a cast floral display on both upper branches, inside and outside, and shows ornate foliate design at the knucklebow / pommel junction. The original leather washer remains. Grips employ the typical M1840 grooved wooden handle that is wrapped in shark or ray skin. The complete double-twist of brass wire, accompanied by single strand on each side, is tight and in place. Phygerian-style brass pommel cap has a high dome tang with a peened blade tang. Casting detail is profuse and sharp.

Iron scabbard with iron mountings, throat is secured by a rivet and is typical of European origin. Scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits a pleasing uniform gray patina overall. No dents to speak of only the slightest ding located about 9” above the drag. Mounts are tight and strong, as are the iron rings.

Here is an imported M1840 cavalry officer’s saber with scabbard that is worthy to be in any Civil War collection.  [jet]
