This brass counterguard is from a knights-head Non-commissioned Officer’s sword that was used from 1850-1870 with many seeing use during the Civil War.
The piece consists of two elongated triangular quillons with panels that contain a patriotic shield bearing thirteen stars in a horizontal pattern over vertical stripes.
Brass has a nice light untouched patina and comes mounted in a modern 12.75 x 12.50 inch frame that is 3.00 inches deep. Mounted below the item is a brass nomenclature plaque.
Very attractive piece.
