This original M1840 Musician sword is a handsome specimen and typical of that carried by Federal musicians and band members. However, this sword has an etched blade. The overall length of the weapon is 35½” with a bright, steel blade 28” long and ¾” wide at the hilt. It features a brass hilt with no guards. The single-edged steel blade has a stopped fuller. Some scattered, darker oxidation appears near the tip. Etching includes geometric scroll work and fouled anchor on one side. On the other side appears “AMES CO / CHICOPEE / MASS” and similar geometric scroll designs with the old English letters “N.A.” Brass hilt feature grips with a simulated cast-brass wire wrap cover.
Metal scabbard is fitted with a brass drag and brass throat. No inspector’s stamps are found on the knucklebow or drag. A few moderate dents and wear are to be found on the drag. Some wear to this item, but very unusual to have an etched blade and Naval motif on a 1840 musician’s sword. [jet]
