Very rare example of a M1850 Foot Officer Sword with battle damage consisting of a .58 caliber bullet strike in the guard. Standard foot officer sword that was obviously struck by a .58 caliber bullet.  This sword appears to be American made, not an import. Hilt has great patina with traces of gilt.  Damage is to the bottom of guard where it joins the knuckle bow as if pointed toward the enemy. Leather grip, wire, and washer are in great shape as well.  Leather scabbard is top stitched. Brass mounts and drag have the same brown patina with traces of gilt as the guard.

Blade has deep etching with the majority of its frost.  Etch pattern is 20.75 inches long.  Blade only has one large fuller and no secondary fuller. Obverse blade has foliate / foliate / US /foliate /foliate.  Reverse blade is the same except it has a large US Eagle.  Spine has Iron Proof with foliate but it is not done in the style normally seen by Solingen blade makers.

This is a great condition foot officer sword that one wishes could tell its tale and that of its owner. Formerly from the late John Henry Kurtz collection.

Note: A .58 caliber Minie fits the strike perfectly.
