The sword is approximately 35” long overall with a 29 ¼” blade. This sword is so slightly curved that it looks straight at first glance. It is single-edged with a false edge extending back from the point. There is a wide deep fuller which runs from the ricasso to the beginning of the false edge. There is also a narrow fuller above the other. The obverse side of the blade is decorated with etched designs which include floral sprays, an American eagle, with ribbon with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM", and other military motifs. This side is stamped “F. JAHN / PHILA”. Francis Jahn had a business on Race Street in Philadelphia listed as a “manufacturer of every description of regulation swords” and offered electro-plating services. The reverse side bears the letters "U.S." squeezed together so as to fit perpendicular to the length of the blade also with the usual military and floral designs. This side is stamped “W. CLAUBERG SOLINGEN” around the standing knight logo. Clauberg was one of the foremost blade makers during the Civil War. The spine of the blade is marked "IRON PROOF." The blade is clean but with a light gray tone that hides the etching. The blade is about an inch short and may have had the tip re-sharpened. The grips have a wooden handle with a sharkskin cover in good, tight condition. Cover is wrapped with double-twist of wire flanked with single strands of wire.  Wire retains traces of gilt and remains tight.  The brass guard is filled with pierced floral designs. Quillion, knucklebow and pommel are all complete and tight. Thin leather washer remains.

Leather scabbard is solid and strong. There is a brass throat with ring, a middle brass band with ring, and a brass drag. All scabbard attachments are screwed in place.
