This sword has a beautiful bright blade that is very clean and free of any mottling. Blade measures 28 7/8” long and 1 1/8” wide at the ricasso. The standard Ames Naval etching on the blade is near perfect condition. The obverse etching begins at the ricasso where the maker’s information, “AMES MFG. CO.  / CHICOPEE / MASS.”  can be located. Followed by simple scrollwork design that ends with a patriotic shield superimposed over a naval anchor, surrounded by simple floral design. Top panel with panoply of arms. The reverse side has an American wing spread eagle on top of a naval gun with rays above the eagle. Naval anchor with rope wrapped around it. Next panel has the letters “U.S.N.” inside a simple floral design. Top panel with floral design with vine. All the etching is very strong with strong frosting on the blade. Leather washer at the base of the ricasso is present and complete.

Finally detailed ornate brass hilt, guard and knucklebow. Oak leaf scrolls and acanthus leaves with “USN” in panel. Brass hilt has never been cleaned; very tight grip with all of its original gold gilt. Choice rayskin grip with double twist wire. Brass pommel cap decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves and an American wing spread eagle, surrounded by 13 stars on cap.

Leather scabbard has maker’s stamp, “Ames Mfg. Co / Chicopee / Mass” on upper mount. All mounts in excellent condition, with strong gold gilt finish. Leather scabbard strong with one minor “crease”.

A very nice choice Ames Naval Officer’s Sword  from the American Civil War.     [ws]
