Superb example. Pommel cap is nicely engraved, chased with leaf designs and five pointed stars. Balance of the brass hilt is superb with standard pierced scroll/floral designs, with nearly all of its original gilt. The single edged straight blade measures 30.5” with nearly 100% of its original frosted panel upon which is engraved fancy scroll and leaf designs with “US” in center on reverse; obverse with wingspread eagle. Both sides with panoply of arms. Ricasso of obverse side with “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass” etched in panel. Original white buff leather washer intact. Blade bright with only a few small stain blemishes.
Sharkskin covered grip is perfect as is the twisted brass wire wrap. Scabbard of black leather with brass throat stamped “Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee / Mass.” Both mounts and drag with nearly all their original gilt finish. Drag is secured with a small brass tack instead of a screw. Appears to have been that way for a long time.
A wonderful example! [ss]
