AMES MODEL 1840 NCO SWORD AND SCABBARD DATED 1863

$795.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 988-02

This is a Model 1840 N.C.O. sword. In excellent overall condition, these swords were carried by Federal non-commissioned officers as a sign of authority in the ranks. Sword is approximately 39” long and has a beautiful leather scabbard. The 32” long straight sword blade is mirror bright with no nicks. The ricasso bears a typically light Ames Mfg. Co. / Chicopee, Mass. stamp on one side and a stronger “U.S. / ADK / 1863” on the other. The sword’s brass hilt features a simulated wire-wrap grip, a double shell-style guard, and a single-branch knucklebow.  Inspector’s initials (AHC) are found on the knucklebow. Brass has an uncleaned, mellow patina. Original red leather washer remains.

Black leather scabbard is in amazing condition; with no breaks or folds. Leather has perhaps five fine cracks in the finish. Edge tooling on one side and complete, tight stitching on the other. Fitted with brass drag and throat. There are no dents to the brass furniture. The drag shows no wear and the inspector’s initials (AHC) are again found on that piece. Belt hook remains in place on brass throat as does red wool lining on inside.

Any collector will find it difficult to acquire a finer Civil War NCO sword and scabbard.   [jet]
