Here is a Civil War Ames Model 1840 artillery saber in good original condition. Made for artillery drivers, this edged weapon is stamped on the obverse ricasso of the blade with a clear stamping “U.S. / J.H. / 1861” in block format while the reverse ricasso reads “MADE BY / AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / MASS”. This saber has a 32¼” long, curved, single edged steel blade with a flat top, and a single wide fuller. Blade is gray with darker speckling. Blade’s true edge has several small nicks. Original leather washer pad is missing.

Entire brass hilt, including the pommel has dull yellow patina. Original grips, strong and tight, consist of a turned, wooden handle with seventeen grooves wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap. Leather is dry and has minor scuffing overall. Brass wire wrap is slightly loose with one repaired break.

The iron scabbard exhibits a dark gray/brown appearance. No visible stampings on drag. The large, iron mounts are tight and hold the two sword rings. Scabbard collar is stamped with a small “H”.  Scabbard is in good condition with a few dents.

A solid example of an Ames model 1840 artillery saber.  [jet]
