Double edged blade meas. approx. 21.00 inches and has a surface that is semi-bright with light mottling. The surface also has scattered moderate pitting.
Obverse ricasso is marked “N. P. AMES” over “SPRINGFIELD.” Reverse ricasso has a very strong “U.S.N.” over “1843” and “NWP.” Blade edges have several deep nicks.
Standard hilt with brass knucklebow that is narrow near the pommel and widens toward the blade ending in a quillon. Quillon is stamped on one side with “JCP” and on the other with “WAJ.” Knucklebow is stamped with the number “98.” Grip is cast brass with a spread-winged eagle worked into each side of the pommel with a scaled grip. The brass of the grip and guard have a light patina that is darker in low areas.
