Item Code: 1000-878

The drawn sword meas. approx. 39.00 inches long from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 33.00 inches long with a 22.25 inch long stopped wide fuller topped by a 14.75 inch narrow fuller. The blade surface is attractively bright with only very light scattered mottling. The edge has very small scattered nicks. Both sides of the blade are etched. The obverse has scrollwork and foliate with a spread-winged eagle with a riband that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak. Above this is an arc of flame followed by a laurel branch. The reverse side has a Grecian urn with a floral plant in it topped by a block “US” with in a wreath of laurel outlined with a sunburst topped by an oak leaf branch. Etching is strong. The obverse ricasso is etched with “HUNT & GOODWIN.” The opposite ricasso is marked “CLAUBERG / SOLINGEN.” Complete leather washer is present but worn.

Blade has a highly detailed, two-line, cutout brass hilt with the guard and knucklebow cast in one piece.  Upper line of brass hilt features a block “US” surrounded by finely case foliate. Bottom line has an intricate, foliate cutout design. The grip is made of ribbed wood and is leather wrapped with several courses twisted brass wire flanked by straight brass wire. Phrygian pommel cap is border-engraved with a laurel leave floral pattern with a patriotic shield at center. Knucklebow and guard wiggle a bit. Quillon is a nicely formed round scroll. Brass surfaces have a nice untouched patina.

Blued metal scabbard is turning brown. It does have some very small dents on the drag and some thinning finish. Scabbard is complete with both brass mounts, rings and throat. Top mount is decorated with a shield on which is a worn presentation. All that is legible is “PRESENTED TO Q.M……” Unfortunately the rest of the presentation is almost impossible to read. The name of the recipient, with much work, may be brought to light. All that is known about him so far is that he was a Quartermaster.

The lower mount is decorated with stars and foliate while the drag has a rising sun with stars and geometric shapes.  [ad]
