Presented here is a wonderful representative of an original Confederate “dog river style” cavalry saber. Carried by Southern cavalrymen during the War Between the States, this specimen is the most usual Confederate saber encountered in the collecting community and it bears a strong resemblance to the Federal Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber.
The overall length of the sword from point to pommel is approx. 41.00 inches long. The steel curved blade with a flat back has a length of 35.00 inches and a width of 1.08 at the ricasso. The blade also has a single unstopped fuller approx.26.00 inches long. Blade has a semi-bright appearance with moderate to heavy mottling scattered over its surface. Pitting is very little and scattered. The true edge of the blade has some tiny nicks.
The hilt exhibits a tapered, grooved wooden handle that is wrapped tightly in original, black leather and wound tightly and completely with a single, untwisted brass wire. Leather surface has some light scuffing in spots. The cast brass hilt features a symmetrical, two-branch guard with knucklebow mated to a brass pommel cap of the Phrygian-helmet pattern. Guard exhibits some casting flaws. No leather washer is present at bottom of hilt. The knucklebow wiggles a bit. All brass has acquired a light patina.
The undented iron scabbard is dark with heavy oxidation and scattered surface rust and pitting. This is heavier on the drag. Throat is present but set screw is missing. Both ring mounts are brass and both rings are present.
This is an honest and untouched Confederate cavalry saber of the “dog river” style. [ad]
