IRON-MOUNTED M1818 SWORD WITH SCABBARD BY NATHAN STARR

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: E2784

The leading sword maker in America from 1798 to 1830 was Connecticut’s own Nathan Starr of Middletown and his firm produced the military edged weapon presented here.

Saber features a hefty iron hilt matched to a 32 ½” long, curved blade. Blade features a pronounced clipped point and fullers. The robust blade measures 1 ¼” wide with a ¼” thick back and has no etchings or engravings save the maker’s stamp on the obverse ricasso. Stamping reads “US / P (proved) / LS / N. STARR” in sharp, crisp marks. Blade, still sharp and strong, exhibits a nice semi-bright surface with just patches of darker spotting. There are no nicks in the edge.

Knucklebow is pierced near the pommel for a sword knot. Grips are wood, ribbed and shaped to fit the hand and wear a black leather wrap that is original showing only minor wear and crazing.  Retains original leather washer.

Accompanying scabbard is equally nice.  Several dents along the scabbard’s length which do not detract. Original mounts.  The lower ring is original while the upper ring appears to have been replaced at some point. Nice wear and dark appearance to scabbard appropriate for it’s age.

This American-made, iron-hilted, enlisted horseman’s saber is a fine specimen of early Americana edged weaponry and a great collectible.  [jet]
