Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber has an inspected blade that is dated 1859 making it a very early example.

The bright, slightly curved blade has a surface that shows only very minor amounts of mottling and no pitting. Blade measures approx. 35.00 inches long with a stopped wide fuller that meas. approx. 27.50 inches long and a narrow fuller that is approx. 19.50 inches long. The blade edge has no nicks. Obverse riccasso is crisply marked “US” over “J.H.” over “1859.” The reverse ricasso bears a strong three-line maker’s mark that reads “AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE, / MASS.”  The leather washer at the base of the ricasso is near perfect.

The brass two-branch guard and knucklebow is strong, tight and wears a pleasing mellow patina. The brass pommel cap is marked “J.H.” with “JW” in script. The center-swell wood grip features a very nice dark brown leather that shows some light crazing but is otherwise in very good condition. Twisted brass wire wrap is tight.

The original steel scabbard is very dark with moderate scattered surface pitting throughout. Each side of the scabbard by the drag has a dent. Both mounts and rings are present as are the throat and drag. Due to the dark surface of the iron the scabbard does not show any inspector’s marks. [ad]
