US MODEL 1833 DRAGOON SABER

$2,500.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1000-868

The overall length of the drawn saber is approx. 39.50 inches. The very clean bright blade has a rounded quill back with a true edge that has several tiny nicks scattered over its surface. Clearly etched on the obverse ricasso is “N.P. AMES / CUTLER / SPRINGFIELD / 1838” in four lines. Beneath this are stamped the inspector’s initials “W.S.” The reverse ricasso is strongly etched with “UNITED STATES” in script over a floral spray. The original buff leather washer remains and is in excellent shape.

The grips are wood covered with leather and wrapped in twisted silver wire. Leather shows light crazing but is otherwise very good. Wire is complete. The backstrap and pommel cap are brass as is the ferrule at the bottom of the grip. The knuckle bow expands into three branches and ends in a quillon that is stamped on one side with “W.S.” There is some minor shrinkage to the leather and wood of the grip. Holding the sword horizontally a small bit of daylight can be seen between the grip and the brass backstrap.

The steel scabbard is bright with very small amounts of mottling. Both rings and mounts are present as is the large drag. The scabbard is free of dents but does show some light to moderate surface pitting on the lower third.

Overall it is an attractive sword in very good condition.
