officers and mounted officers of infantry, i.e. an infantry regiment’s staff and field officers. A number are known to have been carried by generals and likely their staffs as well. This is the Type-1, which features a recessed oval in the underside of the guard to receive and seal the upper end of the scabbard, which does not have a throat. The blade is etched at the ricasso with the early “N.P. AMES / CUTLER / SPRINGFIELD,” a blade address used by Ames until 1847-48.

The sword is untouched and in very good condition. The brass hilt has a mellow, aged patina. The grip wrap is original and all there. The twisted binding wire is mostly gone, but three turns are still in place, anchored by the pommel cap. The scabbard is steel gray in color mixed with some grays and browns, in very good condition, free of dents or pitting, showing just some deeper gray and brown areas near the drag.

The blade shows bright for most of length with just some gray spots near the tip and darker gray areas on either side of the ricasso (more on the reverse than the obverse.) The etching is very legible and still shows some frosting around the edges of the motifs. The reverse of the blade shows foliate designs entwined with acorns, a bow and quiver with more foliate designs, a “U.S.” with an Indian standing on a rock above, and lastly more foliage. Over the blade address and rope border, the obverse shows a stand of arms with spears, banner and a liberty cap, with foliate elements above, followed by an American eagle with an E Pluribus Unum dry-point engraved scroll overhead, stars and sunburst.

This is a scarce US regulation saber in very good condition, with an early configuration and date range.  [sr]
